Ship of Destiny

Book 3 of the Liveship Traders Trilogy series
The Mad Ship trilogy, wrapped around the stories of the Vestrit family of Traders, comes to a conclusion - at least for now - in a big, roaring, convoluted delight of a book. Fans of ships and sea-faring adventure have much to love in these.

Mother Ronica Vestrit, newly widowed and left in a lurch, struggles to deal with a violent political uprising at home that leaves her in a desperate situation along with her older daughter, Keffria, whose husband and oldest son may be lost at sea along with the family liveship.

Younger daughter Althea teams up with long-time friend Brashen and new friend Amber to salvage the mad ship himself, Paragon, in order to search for the lost family ship. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are slavers and pirates, spoiled and stranded royalty, mysterious Rain Wilders, clashing cultures, devious and duplicitous Chalcedeans, multiple liveships, confused sea serpents, battles at sea and on land... and a weary, lonely, and demanding sole dragon.

If you ever find yourself in need of taking a leave from this world and getting lost in one that doesn't have any connections to current politics, Robin Hobb's books might be just the thing you're looking for.

(Note: Her most recent trilogy, Shaman's Crossing, Forest Mage, and Renegade Magic, are not set in the same world as all the Farseer/Mad Ship books. Just FYI. Still excellent, but in a whole other setting.)
